Businessman hit by recession fails to reduce divorce settlement

A businessman whose assets have been decimated by the recession has failed to get a reduction in his divorce settlement with his former wife. The Court of Appeal said the law could not be used to protect him from fluctuations in the economy. The ruling may influence the way some divorcing couples negotiate settlements in future.

NHS manager wins record damages in ageism case

An NHS manager has been awarded record damages after being passed over for a new post running breast screening services because she was considered to be too old. Linda Sturdy was 56 when she was discriminated against by Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in 2006. The job she applied for was given to a colleague who is 13 years younger than her.

Husband tried to use bankruptcy to avoid maintenance payments

A court has annulled a mans bankruptcy order after the judge decided that he was simply using it as a way to avoid having to pay maintenance to his wife. During the divorce proceedings the wife had obtained an order for interim maintenance. The husband then successfully issued a petition for his own bankruptcy saying that he was unable to meet his debts.

Redundancy

At the moment the news is dominated by the economic downturn, with considerable attention being given to the distressing situation whereby companies and businesses are making employees redundant. Much coverage has been given to the large number of redundancies at high profile employers such as Woolworths and Nissan and also to closer to home at the pharmaceutical giants based in Kent, GlaxoSmithKline in Dartford and Pfizer in Sandwich.

Now it’s cheaper and easier to register Lasting Powers of Attorney

The process of registering Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA) is being made cheaper and simpler. The announcement by the Office of the Public Guardian, which administers the registration process, follows a public consultation on the implementation of the Mental Capacity Act 2005. LPAs were one of the main provisions introduced by the Act in 2007.
